Thoughts, Words, Works

Daily Double @

Well, yesterday was a thoroughly unproductive evening. I got home to find the back patio cluttered with furniture from my late grandmother's house, including a particular round table of which I have more vague but fond memories than I realized. That got me thinking that I would like to rearrange the furnishings in my room, whose layout has frustrated me for a long time. I ended up puzzling over it for quite a while without coming to a conclusion, and without getting anything else done, either. Which means, I forgot to blog yesterday's kanji practice (the entry yesterday was for the day before). Thus, I'll be going through an extra large portion today:

  • - an, kura - "dark" as in 暗い (dark), 暗殺 (assassination), 暗証番号 (PIN number).
  • - hatake - "cultivated field" used by itself or as a suffix following the type of field, for example イチゴ畑 (strawberry field).
  • - kan, gen, &c. - "period of time" as in 間 (period of time), 時間 (time/hour), 人間 (human), 間に合う (make it in time), and as a suffix to turn a time into a length of time (e.g. 一週間).
  • - take, chiku - "bamboo", mostly used by itself. Also in, 竹の子 (bamboo shoot). As a radical, sometimes only half is used.
  • - kai - "shellfish" by itself or "money" when used as a radical. Not really used in jukugo?
  • - ito - "string" mostly used by itself or as a radical. First thing that comes to mind is 赤い糸 (red string).

Well, that actually wasn't too bad, since all three of the kanji I picked for today are ones that don't really show up a lot in compounds. That's okay, though, because 間 is in like every jukugo ever.
